A Foretaste of Heaven

This past Tuesday I visited the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Columbia. I was the honored guest of Matthew Skipper, son of Kathy White and grandson of John and Patsy Zeigler. Matthew is a student at St. Joseph's, and I was asked, as his pastor, to take part in a special ecumenical service, along with 13 other pastors of various denominations. "Yes, I said, "13 other pastors." We almost had them out numbered!

My experience was a foretaste of what I envision heaven to be, Christians from different theological backgrounds who share a common bond through their love for Jesus and one another.

I want to thank Matthew for having me as his guest and letting me share in his classroom after the service. I was, to say the least, a very proud pastor.(Matthew, you are an excellent host and I loved getting to see your class work, especially your journal with the Castle and Moat in it.)

I also want to thank my Lord and Savior for praying for such a service many, many years before now, as is recorded in the gospel of John, chapter 17. The service at St Joseph's was in recognition of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. And yes, I believe Jesus prayed for such a service when He prayed, "I am praying not only for these disciples [Jesus' first disciples] but also for all who will ever believe in me because of their testimony. [That's us.] My prayer for all of them is that they will be one, just as you and I are one, Father--that just as you are in me and I am in you, so they will be in us(I have given them the glory you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are--I in them and you in me, all perfected into one.( (John 17:20-22 NLT)

Yes, Jesus wants His followers to be "one" or to serve in unity as the body of Christ. This was His will for the early disciples as well as those of us today. So, since this is the case, will you please join Jesus and me in praying for Christian unity among all believers both at home and abroad? And I trust, in the meantime, that you will experience a foretaste of heaven, as did I with Matthew and all the rest at St. Joseph's this past Tuesday.

With Love From Jesus,

Pastor David
