A Tribute to the Truth

"What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus! What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus! Nothing can for sin atone: nothing but the blood of Jesus. Naught of good that I have done: nothing but the blood of Jesus. O precious is the flow that makes me white as snow; no other fount I know; nothing but the blood of Jesus."

A Baptist minister by the name of Robert Lowery wrote both the music and the lyrics to this beautiful hymn in 1876. Obviously, Rev. Lowery knew his Bible and theology quite well. For Hebrews 9:22 says, "Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins." (NLT)

Many have read that same passage of scripture and wondered, why? Why does forgiveness of our sins require the shedding of blood? Well, as the Red Cross would say, "It's the gift of life!"

Yes, blood represents life! Why? Because it is that red substance that flows through our veins that keeps us alive. And without it we would be dead!

I know this sounds a bit morbid, but we must understand such truth in order to understand the great sacrifice that Jesus made on our behalf. For Jesus did give His life, or shed His blood, for our sins! And the very reason He did was so that we would not have to suffer a spiritual death, which would result in eternal separation from God. Jesus gave His all, His very life to save us from spending eternity in hell! This is as the Bible says in I John 3:16, how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. It also says in John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

So, what can wash away your sins and mine? Nothing but the blood of Jesus! Thank you Rev. Lowery for reminding us through your inspiration to write songs. This is a tribute to you and the TRUTH!

With Love From Jesus,

Pastor David
